Where Mist Meets History
Takdah is not a place you stumble upon — it is a place you are drawn to. Named after the Lepcha word for mist and fog, this quiet hamlet in the Darjeeling Hills has always measured time differently. Here, mornings arrive wrapped in cloud, and evenings settle slowly into the sound of wind through pine.
Woods at Cantonment was born into this landscape in 1910, when the British established a cantonment at this elevation as a retreat from the heat of the plains. The estate that stands today carries that original spirit — in the weight of its stone walls, the warmth of its fireplaces, and the unhurried stillness that greets every guest who arrives.
To stay here is not merely to rest. It is to step into a living chapter of Darjeeling’s colonial history — one that has been carefully preserved, and quietly, lovingly kept alive.
"Built in 1910, restored with reverence - a piece of Darjeeling's colonial soul, kept alive."
our estate
A 10,000 sq ft Colonial Legacy
The estate spans a generous 10,000 square feet, much of it unchanged from its original form. Original brickwork lines the walls. Cast-iron fireplaces anchor each room with warmth through the cool hill months. Wide verandahs open to uninterrupted views of forested ridges and, on clear days, the distant peaks of the eastern Himalayas.
Every corner of the property has a story to tell — in the texture of the walls, the proportions of the rooms, and the quiet dignity of a structure that has witnessed more than a century of mountain life.
“We did not build this place. We inherited its soul, and made it our responsibility to pass it on.”

Tea Gardens, Forests & Open Skies
Step outside the estate gates and the hills open up in every direction. Takdah sits at the edge of some of Darjeeling’s most celebrated tea gardens — rows of manicured green that carpet the slopes from valley floor to ridgeline. The scent of fresh leaf in the early morning is something guests rarely forget.
Beyond the gardens lie dense coniferous forests, home to rhododendrons, ferns, and the unhurried rhythms of hill wildlife. Trekking trails weave through these woods, offering routes for all levels — from gentle morning walks to full-day ridge hikes with panoramic views.
The property’s position at 5,100 feet ensures a cool, clean climate throughout the year, making it a sanctuary in every season.

GUEST SATISFACTION
OUR COMMITMENT
Kept With Care Since 2019
When the current stewards took ownership of Woods at Cantonment in 2019, they made a quiet promise — to protect what history had built, and to welcome guests into it with warmth, honesty, and attention.
In the years since, that promise has been kept. A loyal community of travellers has grown around the property, drawn by the rare combination of genuine heritage, personal hospitality, and a landscape that stills the mind. A 4.9-star guest rating, earned across hundreds of stays, speaks not to luxury in the conventional sense — but to the kind of care that makes a place feel like home.
Every guest who walks through our doors is a patron of this preservation.
